Echoes of Humanity
Sculptures by Leonardo Speciale
ArtWalk: 4 July 2025
"We used to create machines to serve us. Now, we shape ourselves in their image. And somewhere in between—we lose the sound of our own voice."
Echoes of Humanity is a series of mixed-media sculptures made from discarded electronics—circuit boards, wires, plastic shells, and forgotten fragments of the digital age. Once tools for communication, these remnants are reassembled into emotional figures: part machine, part human, part ghost.
The process is intuitive. I never design or draft—I respond to feeling. These figures arrive raw, often broken or withdrawn, embodying a silent tension: machines becoming more like us, and us becoming more like them. They kneel, observe, or hide—not as robots, but as vessels of memory and emotion.
Although the theme of ArtWalk2025 is “Out of This World”, this series speaks not of distant galaxies but of a strange new reality we inhabit. One where empathy is automated, and presence is outsourced to screens. My sculptures don’t come from outer space — they come from a future we are building, and a present we barely recognise.
They wait in silence. In streets. On paths. Hoping someone will stop and notice.
They appear strange because they reflect a society we’ve shaped, but no longer recognise as our own. They feel alien, because we’ve begun to feel alien to ourselves.
These sculptures do not shout—they wait. They interrupt the everyday with a silent, human question: What have we become?
They are not machines. They are echoes—of the humanity we risk forgetting.
