Port Macquarie St Columba’s High School student Luke Baker came to our attention earlier this year when he submitted artwork for the Luminance Young and Emerging Artists Exhibition. The judges for that exhibition, Wendy Stokes and Stephen Killick, praised Luke’s painting for its commitment to a moment in time and they chose Little Bay as the best in show, age category 15-25.

For Luke, the recognition fuelled his creation of three new artworks for JOY.

‘My series captures the Port Macquarie coastline, special places that shaped my life as a young surfer and spark joy.

‘Each piece invites the viewer into a moment of coastal connection; from the familiarity of an early morning at Flynn’s Beach Cafe to the calm safety of the lifeguard tower at Lighthouse Beach, and the quiet reflection offered by a lone chair on the Breakwall.

‘Together, they celebrate the simple, radiant beauty of the ocean and the joy I find there.

‘These three pieces, all unique and special, offer a moment of joy and peace alone in nature with the presence and awe of the sea.’
